Set Up Bonus Points & Free Products
Customers earn points for every purchase and redeem them for reward items or store credit. Free products are also available for orders above a certain value and can be automatically added to the shopping cart upon request. Here’s the most common question: Why aren’t customers receiving their points?
At a Glance
- Settings: under Settings → Checkout → Bonus/Free Products. Only customer groups with “Bonus/Free Products Allowed” enabled can participate.
- Reward and free items: under Products → Bonus/Free Products or in the Product Editor, “Miscellaneous” tab.
- Earning points: per item, per order value (“y points for every x euros”), and as a one-time bonus starting at a certain order value. Free products do not cost any points.
- Credit: Immediately upon ordering (ex-factory), or—depending on the selected status—only once the order reaches the warehouse. Cancellations and returns do not automatically deduct points.
- Redeeming: Exchange bonus items for points, convert points to store credit by the customer, or issue a cash payout by you under Products → Gift Cards & Coupons → Convert Bonus Points to Gift Card.
| Component | What the customer gets | Where to set it up |
| Earn bonus points | Points per item, per order total, or a one-time amount based on order total | Settings → Checkout → Bonus/Free Products |
| Reward items | Items for points instead of money | Products → Bonus/Free Products, “Bonus Value (Points)” field |
| Free products | Items available for free once the order total reaches a certain value, either selectable or automatic | Products → Bonus/Free Products, “Free Value (Gross)” field |
Reward Items
The customer adds an item from the rewards shop to the shopping cart. The item costs €0.00; the shop deducts the points when the order is completed.
Conversion by the Customer
If you allow it, the customer can convert points in their account into store credit themselves. They will receive a coupon code via email.
Redemption by You
In the backend, you can redeem points from one or more customers as a gift certificate with a freely selectable amount.
There is also a loyalty discount based on sales. This is a separate module and has nothing to do with bonus points; see Vouchers & Coupons.
Step 1 · Main Switch
Go to Settings → Checkout → Bonus/Free Products and set “Enable/Disable Bonus/Free Products” to true. After that, the bonus fields will appear in the product editor under the “Miscellaneous” tab, the toggle from Step 2 will appear in the customer groups, and the “Bonus Points” section will appear in the customer account. If the toggle is off, the rewards and free items sections will remain empty.
Step 2 · Enable Customer Groups
Under Customers → Customer Groups, edit each group and set “Bonus/Free Products Allowed.” Only enabled groups can earn points and view bonus and free items. By default, “End Customers” is enabled, while “Domestic Resellers” and “EU Resellers” are not.
Step 3 · Exclude guests
Anyone who places an order without a customer account is assigned the “End Customers” group by default. The store deletes the guest account after the order is placed, along with any points associated with it. To ensure the order confirmation does not promise points to guests, create a separate customer group without “Bonus/Free Products Allowed” and select it under Settings → Checkout → Customer Details → Customer Group Assignment for Purchases Without a Customer Account.
All rules of the rewards program are contained in a single group; the list shows the table values in abbreviated form, such as 0:1:1 for end customers, 1 €, 1 point. Click to enlarge.
Points per Item
Set “Earn points via product points” to true. In the product editor, under the “Miscellaneous” tab, enter the points per item under “Bonus points upon purchase of the product.” The customer receives points multiplied by the quantity. The product page and lists display “Earn 20 bonus points when you buy this product.”
Points per Order Value
In the table “Earn Points Based on Order Value (every x euros = y points),” create a row for each customer group: Customer Group, Sales, Points. “End Customers · 1 · 1” means one point per full €1. “Round order value before point calculation” rounds the order value beforehand: none (do not round), floor (round down), ceil (round up), round (commercial rounding).
Once per order value
The “Earn Points Based on Order Value (y points for every x euros)” table awards points once, as soon as the order value reaches a threshold. “End Customers · 250 · 500” means 500 points starting at 250 €. If you have multiple rows for a group, only the highest threshold reached counts.
Points based on merchandise value are awarded only to a customer group with its own row. An enabled group without a row collects only product points. Amounts are in the store’s default currency.
One row per customer group: End customers receive one point per full €1 of merchandise value here; add additional groups using “New Entry.” Click to enlarge.
What Amount the Store Uses for Calculations
The basis is the merchandise value of regularly purchased items. A coupon or gift certificate therefore does not reduce the points.
Includes
- The price of the items, including any feature surcharges, multiplied by the quantity
- exactly as the customer sees it: gross if displayed as gross, net for customer groups with net pricing
Does not count
- Shipping costs
- Coupons, gift certificates, discounts, and all other lines in the summary
- Reward and free items
The “every x euros, y points” rule calculates: merchandise value divided by sales, rounded down, multiplied by points. There are no fractional points.
| Settings | Shopping Cart | Points |
1 point for every 1 €, rounding set to “none” or “floor” | €66.80 product value | 66 |
1 point per 1 €, rounding: ceil or round | €66.80 merchandise value | 67 |
| 5 points for every 10 € | €99.00 purchase amount | 45 (9 full tens × 5) |
| 1 point for every €1 plus 500 points for purchases over €250 | €260.00 purchase value | 760 |
| plus 20 product points per item | 2 of this item | + 40 |
The decisive setting is Settings → Checkout → Bonus/Free Products → Bonus points are credited when status… (multiple selection):
- Blank (default setting): Points are credited immediately upon order completion, even if payment is still pending.
- With selections, for example, “Payment Received” and “Shipped”: The points are held until the order reaches one of the selected statuses. If the order already has one of these statuses at checkout—such as after an instant payment—the points are credited immediately.
By default, the statuses are “Open,” “In Progress,” “Shipped,” “Payment Received,” and “Returned/Canceled.” You must create a status such as “Completed” yourself.
The order confirmation states: “You will be credited with 66 bonus points for this order” or “Once payment is received and processed, you will be credited with 66 bonus points for this order.”
Whoever sets the status counts
The store posts pending points when the status changes in order management (individually or as a batch action), in xoScan, or via the integrations with Billbee, JTL, and the xoPort order synchronization. If a marketing event or the automatic confirmation from certain payment providers sets the status, the points remain pending. In that case, change the line type to “Added” in the points log.
Cancellation, Return, Order Change
- Cancellation or return: The store does not automatically deduct any points. Pending points remain pending and are never posted. You can correct points that have already been posted and deducted reward points in the points log.
- Modify an order in the Order Editor: The store recalculates the points for this order; see Editing Orders.
- Delete an order: The “Delete bonus points from this order” checkbox is preselected and removes all points entries for the order.
Create a reward item
- Under Products → Bonus/Free Products, search for the item in the “Add” tab and click “Select.” Alternatively, in the Product Editor, under the “Miscellaneous” tab, enable “Product is itself a bonus/free product.”
- “Bonus Value (Points)”: the number of points required per item.
- “Maximum per Order” (next to the bonus value): the maximum number of items per order. Leaving this blank means: as many as the points allow.
- Enable “Status (Bonus).”
This is how it appears to the customer
- The “Bonus Products” page lists all rewards. Customers can access it via “View Rewards Store” in their account and via “Go to Rewards Store” in the off-canvas shopping cart.
- The product page says “Get this product with bonus points,” with a price of, for example, “500 bonus points.”
- If the customer doesn’t have enough points, it says “You’re still 120 bonus points short.” Pending points don’t count; the customer must be logged in.
- Rewards in the shopping cart consume their respective points. If the customer no longer has enough points, the shopping cart reduces the quantity.
A reward may be inactive in the shop. The rewards list and rewards view only check “Status (Bonus),” not the product status. This allows you to offer items that are available only in exchange for points.
For items with variants, enter each variant individually; the master item and variants do not inherit settings from one another. The list under Products → Bonus/Free Products filters by “Bonus Active,” “Free Active,” “Product Inactive,” and more. “Remove Empty Entries” clears out rows without a status or value.
To create a permanent menu item, link to the pages store-bonus-products.php (Rewards) and product-free.php (Free Products), for example in the footer. You can edit the introductory text for the rewards page under CMS → CMS Manager in the $cms_bonus_products module; by default, there is a placeholder there (“Insert the information text for your rewards program here.”).
The list displays the bonus and free product values along with their maximums in parentheses and toggles all four statuses directly; the thermos mug is active as a bonus, even though the item itself is inactive. Click to enlarge.
The customer converts the points themselves
Set “Allow customers to redeem points for a voucher” to true. Under “Bonus Points” in the customer account, “Redeem Bonus Points for Credit” will appear as soon as the customer has earned points. In the default template, the button is located next to “Show Rewards Store” and therefore requires at least one reward item. The customer selects the number of points, views the amount, and confirms.
They receive a voucher code with a redemption link via email; the code is also listed in their points history. Upon redemption, the store credits the amount to their account balance, which they can apply toward their next order.
Only credited points can be converted, minus the points occupied by reward items in the shopping cart. The store verifies this on the server with every conversion. from 4.9.137
You can redeem
Under Products → Gift Cards & Coupons → Convert Bonus Points to Gift Card, you can view all customers with credited points, sortable by points.
- One customer: In the promotions menu, select “Send Points as a Gift Certificate.” You can choose any number of points and any amount, for example, as a goodwill gesture.
- Multiple customers: Check the boxes (click “Select All” at the top of the page) and select “Credit points to selected customers.” Each customer receives their full balance in points.
- "Preview " opens the customer’s points log.
- "Delete" clears the customer’s bonus account without issuing a gift card, including pending points.
Customize the voucher email
The email is not an email template. You can edit its text under Tools → xoLanguage: “Frontend” framework, “store-bonus-track” section (subject, redemption link, voucher code). When processing payments in the backend, the salutation, value, and greeting come from the “Backend” framework, “products-bonus-to-gift” section. For information on how xoLanguage works, see CMS Manager & Emails.
You can redeem points for selected customers using “Credit Points to Selected Customers,” or for a single customer using “Send Points as a Voucher” in the Promotions menu. Click to enlarge.
Create a free product
Just like a reward: go to Products → Bonus/Free Products or use the “Other” tab in the product editor. The fields:
- “Free Value (gross)”: the order value at which the item is offered for free. This is calculated the same way as for points—that is, excluding shipping, coupons, and other free items; see Calculation.
- “Maximum per Order” (next to the free value): Upper limit for this item.
- “Automatic Free Product”: The store automatically adds the item to the shopping cart.
- Enable“Status (Free).”
| Free Value (Gross) | Maximum per order | Customer receives |
| empty | empty | one item per order, regardless of the order value |
| empty | 3 | up to 3 per order, regardless of the order value |
| 50 | 1 | one item as soon as the order value exceeds 50 € |
| 50 | blank | one unit per full 50 € of merchandise value; for 100 €, that is, two |
| 50 | 3 | One item per full 50 €, up to a maximum of three |
Automatic Free Items
If the order total is high enough, the store adds the item in the appropriate quantity to the cart and removes it again if the order total drops. The customer cannot change the quantity. If the customer removes the item, the store will not automatically add it back. If there is no free item value specified and the maximum quantity is greater than 1, the system uses the item price as the free item value.
Limit for All Free Items
“Maximum number of free products per order” limits the total number of free items, for example, to 1. If the limit is exceeded, the store first removes the items with the lowest free value. “Maximum number also applies to ‘automatic free products’” (set to true by default) includes the automatic free products.
An automatic free product: no bonus value, free value of 50 €, maximum of one per order, “Status (Free)” enabled. Click to enlarge.
Where customers find free products
- Product page: “Get this product for free” button. The price reads “free with a minimum order value of €50.00” (maximum 1) or “1 free item / €50.00 order value,” plus, if applicable, “max. 3 per order.” If the order value is missing, it says “still missing …”.
- “Free Products” page: lists all free items.
- In the shopping cart: only if there is a “Free Products / Shopping Cart” line under Settings → Design → Product Listing → Configurator for Product Presentation and Marketing. It is missing by default.
Example: Tiered gifts based on order value
For orders over 30 € in value, a cloth bag is included; for orders over 50 €, a sample set is included instead:
- “Cloth Bag”: Free value 30, maximum per order 1, automatic, status (Free) enabled.
- “Sample Set”: Free value 50, maximum per order 1, automatic, status (Free) enabled.
- “Maximum number of free products per order” = 1, “Maximum number also applies to ‘automatic free products’” =
true.
Result: For orders over €30, the cloth bag is added to the cart; for orders over €50, only the sample set is added, because the store removes the free item with the lower value when the threshold is exceeded. Without “automatic,” the customer chooses one of the two themselves.
Without a tiered pricing structure, a free item is an “all-or-nothing” offer: The customer can take a certain number for free, and any additional items are removed from the shopping cart. With a tiered pricing structure, the first few items remain free, and each additional item is charged a fixed price.
Setting: Settings → Checkout → Bonus/Free Products → Tiered Pricing for Free Items
For each row, enter the quantity at which a price applies and the net price per item you charge starting from that quantity. The last row is open-ended and must not be 0.00. If the table is left blank, the previous behavior applies.
All free items in an order are counted together, in the order in which they were added to the shopping cart. Tax is calculated based on the respective item.
Example
| From | Net Price per Unit |
|---|
| 1 | 0.00 € |
| 3 | 5.00 € |
| 5 | 7.00 € |
| 6 | 10.00 € |
The first and second items are free; the third and fourth cost 5.00 € each; the fifth item costs 7.00 €; and starting with the sixth, each costs 10.00 €. Six items therefore cost 27.00 € net.
Here’s how the customer sees it
In the shopping cart, the item remains as a single line with a quantity field. Below that is the breakdown, such as “2 × 0.00 € free” and “3 × 5.00 € starting with the 3rd item,” with the total for the item on the right.
In the order summary, order confirmation, and on receipts, each price tier appears as a separate line with the note “Price Tier,” so that the price and tax rate for each line remain clear.
Important when a pricing tier is configured
“Maximum per Order” and “Free Value (gross)” on the item, as well as “Maximum Number of Free Products per Order,” no longer limit the free quantity but rather the total quantity of both free and paid items. A blank field in these fields means there is no limit.
The store automatically adds free items only up to the last free tier; it never adds paid items to the cart without the customer’s consent. Paid tiers do not earn bonus points but do count toward free shipping.
Set Settings → Checkout → Bonus/Free Products → Free Items as a Dialog Above the Shopping Cart to true. Above the shopping cart, you’ll then see “Free Items for Your Order” with the “Select Now” button.
- In the dialog, the customer checks off items. “Apply Selection” adds them to the shopping cart and removes any deselected items.
- Automatic free items are listed there with “Added automatically,” while items with variants include a link to the product page labeled “Select variant.”
- Once the maximum number is reached, the dialog disables additional tiles, and the counter displays something like “1 of 2 selected.”
This requires the same “Free Products / Shopping Cart” row in the configurator for product presentation and marketing. Limits and price tiers remain unchanged.

The “Your Bonus Points” page
The customer sees their total balance and the points that have been credited, along with each entry detailing the order or coupon code and status. If they have points, “Show Rewards Store” appears as soon as there is at least one reward item available. Next to it is “Apply Bonus Points to Balance” if the conversion is allowed; in the default template, this appears only alongside the Rewards Store button.
Below the history is a standard text from the CMS module $cms_bonus_hinweis. By default, it describes sample rules (“1 point per euro,” rounded to the nearest whole number, credited after payment is received, deducted for returns), which must match your settings. Customize it under CMS → CMS Manager.
The customer sees the total balance and credited points, each entry with its status, and below that, your rule text from the CMS module $cms_bonus_hinweis. Click to enlarge.
Customer List and Customer Data
Under Customers → Customers, the sortable “Bonus Points” column displays the current balance: points credited and manually added, minus points redeemed, excluding pending points. Clicking the number opens the log.
When editing a customer, the “Bonus Points” field appears in the “Customer Data” tab, with pending points shown in parentheses. The pencil icon next to it (“View/Edit Bonus Points History”) also opens the logbook.
Points Log
Each row has a type, points, an order number, and a date. Types: “Added,” “Pending,” “Deducted,” “Manual.” Pending points are not included in the total.
Rows can be edited and deleted. In the “Insert” tab, you can enter entries manually: select “Manual” as the type; enter positive points to credit and negative points to deduct, with an order number if desired. The customer can view the row in their history.
In the order, the “Miscellaneous” tab shows how many points the order has earned and whether any are still pending, for example, “66 points pending status change.”
In the Points Log, you can make manual corrections: The “Insert” tab opens a row; here, enter −50 points with the type “Manual.” Click to enlarge.
CSV: Export and Import
Under Tools → xoPort CSV Import/Export Manager, the “Products (Complete)” importer contains the following columns:
products points – Bonus points awarded upon purchase of the product
bonus points, max bonus – Bonus value (points) and maximum bonus amount
bonus value, max free – Free value and maximum free item
status bonus, status free, auto free – Toggle switches, values 1 or 0
Use this file or a copy that contains only the necessary columns for exporting. Important note when importing: If both “status bonus” and “status free” are empty in a row, the import will remove the bonus/free entry for that item. If both columns are completely missing from the file, the entry remains unchanged.
XML Import and Marketing
The XML product import in the inventory management system can include this same block. If you do not want the import to overwrite an item, set the “Update Bonus/Free” toggle to “No” in the Import Lock tab of the Product Editor.
With the Marketing module, the reactions “Products: Bonus Product Status” and “Products: Free Product Status” enable and disable items on a scheduled basis; the condition “Customer: Bonus Points Balance” identifies customers with points, for example, for a reminder email. - “Bonus/Free Products On/Off” must remain set to
true. Otherwise, rewards, free products, and the “Your Bonus Points” page will disappear.
- Set “Earn points through product points” to
false.
- Clear both tables labeled “Earn points based on order value…”. Setting the points to 0 has the same effect.
- Customize the rule text
$cms_bonus_hinweis and, if necessary, disable “Show Bonus Points in Cart.”
The store will continue to credit pending points from older orders as soon as those orders reach the appropriate status. The total balance will therefore continue to rise for a few more days. If you want to completely stop the program, redeem the points under “Bonus Points to Gift Certificate” and then disable the module. Once it’s disabled, the bonus management section in the backend will only display a note indicating that the module is deactivated.
Link credit to a status
Select “Payment Received” or “Shipped.” If you do not make a selection, the points are credited immediately—even for orders that are never paid for.
Simple Point Value
100 points = 1 € (0.01) is easy to understand. Enter the same rule in the rule text for the customer account.
Free Items with Care
Sample sizes, promotional items, or clearance items work well. Limit the quantity using “Maximum per Order.”
How do I disable bonus point earning without customers losing their points?
Leave “Bonus/Free Products On/Off” enabled, set “Earn Points via Product Points” to
false, and clear both “Earn Points via Order Value…” tables. Customers will continue to redeem points; pending points from older orders will still be added. See the step-by-step guide under
“Stop Earning Points.”
Why aren’t bonus points being credited to a customer?
Most often, the customer group isn’t enabled, there’s no corresponding row in the rule tables for that group, the customer placed the order as a guest, or the points are pending status. The “Miscellaneous” tab of the order shows whether an order earned points. See
“Troubleshooting” for all possible causes.
What amount is used to calculate bonus points?
The value of the regularly purchased items as seen by the customer (gross or net, depending on the customer group), excluding shipping costs, gift cards, and discounts. Product points are added per item. See
“Calculation” for examples.
Why doesn’t a product show any bonus points?
The product page only lists product points. For bonus points to be displayed, “Earn Points via Product Points” must be enabled, “Bonus Points on Purchase of the Product” must be checked for the item, and the visitor’s customer group must be authorized. Points based on purchase value are only shown in the shopping cart. The product page can display the equivalent value of these points using “Show point value on the product page.” from 4.10
How do customers redeem their bonus points?
There are two ways: by exchanging them for reward items from the reward shop or, if you allow it, by converting them into store credit under “Bonus Points” in the customer’s account. You can also pay out points as a gift card in the backend. Only points that have been posted to the account count. See
Reward Items and
Points in Credit Balance.
Where do I edit the email for the bonus points voucher?
Under Tools → xoLanguage, not in the email templates. The “Frontend” framework, “store-bonus-track” section contains the subject line and the text for redemption. When redeeming in the backend, the salutation, value statement, and greeting come from the “Backend” framework, “products-bonus-to-gift” section.
How do I ensure that only registered customers receive bonus points?
Create a customer group without “Bonus/Free Products Allowed” and select it under Settings → Checkout → Customer Details → Customer Group Assignment for purchases without a customer account. Guests don’t keep any points anyway, because their guest account is deleted after the order is placed; with this custom group, the order confirmation won’t promise them any points either.
How do I hide the bonus points notice in the shopping cart?
Set “Show Bonus Points in Shopping Cart” to false. For visitors without a customer account, “Shopping Cart Display for Guests Without Bonus Eligibility” controls the text (none = no message). You can remove the sentence from the order confirmation using the placeholder {BONUS_TEXT} from the “Order Confirmation” email template.
Can I offer an inactive item as a reward?
Yes. The rewards list and rewards view only check “Status (Reward).” The item will then appear in the rewards shop but not in the regular product lineup. The same applies to free items with “Status (Free).”
How do I set up multiple free products tiered by order value?
Assign each free item its own free value with a maximum of 1, and set “Maximum Number of Free Products per Order” to 1. If the limit is exceeded, the shop will keep the item with the highest free value. An example can be found under
“Tiering Gifts by Product Value.”
Can I link a free product to a specific item?
Not with this module: Free products are based solely on the order value. If the same item is included for free starting at a certain quantity, use the “In-Kind Discount” in the Product Editor under the “Prices” tab. To add a different item to the cart at a price of 0, set a feature value with “Related Products” and the type “Add to Cart” in
the Product Attributes section.
XONIC Premium: Erweiterte Merkmalsfunktionen
Do bonus points expire, for example, annually?
No. The store does not have an expiration date or fiscal year-end. On a specific date, you can redeem the points under Products → Gift Cards & Coupons → Redeem Bonus Points for a Gift Card. You can remind customers with points using the marketing condition “Customer: Bonus Points Balance.” If you inform customers of an expiration date, you’ll need to set up a separate process for this.
How do I export or import bonus and free items?
Use the “Products (Complete)” porter under
Tools → xoPort CSV Import/Export Manager; it contains all bonus and free item fields. During import, a row with empty “status bonus” and “status free” columns will remove the entry. See
Import & Export for details.
Can I export the point balances for all customers?
There is no export option for this. For an overview, sort the customer list by the “Bonus Points” column or open “Bonus Points to Voucher”: There you’ll find all customers with credited points, sorted by points.
What happens to points when an order is canceled or returned?
Nothing happens automatically. Pending points are never credited; points that have already been credited remain as is; and redeemed reward points are not returned. Correct this by adding a manual entry in the points log. If you modify the order in the order editor, the store will recalculate the points.
Is the loyalty discount part of the rewards program?
No. The loyalty discount is a separate module in the checkout summary and grants a discount based on sales over a specific period. See
“Vouchers & Coupons” for details on how the period is calculated.
