Google Will Penalize Manipulated "Back" Buttons Starting in June 2026

Starting June 15, 2026, Google will take global action against so-called “back-button hijacking.” Websites that redirect users to unwanted advertising pages when they click the back button risk a drastic drop in search rankings.

What is back-button hijacking?

A manipulative method that lures users into redirect traps

In back-button hijacking, websites manipulate browser navigation: Instead of returning to the previous page, users are redirected to advertising pages or spam offers. Google will classify this practice as an explicit violation of its guidelines on malicious practices going forward.

The manipulated scripts often sneak into the source code via third-party ad networks or external JavaScript libraries—often without the site operator’s direct intent. This is precisely why it’s so important to review all embedded scripts.

What are the consequences for affected websites?

Ranking losses and manual penalties from Google

Automatic demotion

Affected sites may be ranked significantly lower in Google search results.

Manual penalties

In severe cases, there is a risk of complete removal from the Google index.

Complex Unblocking Process

After removing the scripts, site operators must submit a request to have the penalties lifted.

What should online store owners do now?

Three steps to secure your online store

1. Check third-party scripts

Check all externally embedded scripts, tracking codes, and ad networks. Often, it is precisely these services that manipulate browser navigation without your knowledge.

2. Check your own code

Make sure no scripts alter the browser history or redirect the Back button. Test the Back button on various subpages of your store.

3. Meet the deadline

Complete the cleanup before June 15, 2026. Once the deadline passes, Google’s automatic detection will kick in—and by then, it may be too late for your rankings and visibility.
