Price Shock at JTL: Why Retailers Are Now Considering Alternatives

As of April 1, 2026, JTL has fundamentally overhauled its pricing structure. The result: unexpected bills, frustrated merchants, and a growing willingness to switch. We take an objective look at the situation—and show what really matters when switching systems.

What happened?

A price change with far-reaching consequences

According to a detailed report by the industry portal Wortfilter.de, JTL fundamentally changed its pricing structure effective April 1, 2026. As part of the transition, all existing customers were automatically upgraded to paid editions —based on the feature set of the licenses stored in the customer center.

The problem: Even trial accounts, licenses that hadn’t been used in a long time, and formerly free community versions were suddenly billed as paid packages. Since invoices were sent out on April 16 and 17, 2026, complaints have been piling up in the official JTL Facebook group.

JTL itself admitted that it is technically unable to determine which licenses are still actively in use. The official response so far has been limited to advising users to open a support ticket—even as the volume of support requests has increased significantly.

What does this mean for affected merchants?

An overview of the most common issues

Unexpected invoices

Merchants are reporting invoices for packages they never actively booked—some exceeding 1,000 euros.

Massive cost increase

According to user reports, costs in some cases rose from around 117 euros annually to as much as 500 euros monthly.

Limited support

Despite the need for extensive clarification, support is overwhelmed—even service partners were only notified at the last minute.

What Merchants Should Keep in Mind Now

Three important steps for making an informed decision

1. Carefully review invoices

Check exactly which services are being billed. Were test accounts or inactive licenses automatically upgraded? Document the changes.

2. Compare total costs

Compare your current and future costs. Take into account not only license fees, but also support, hosting, and extensions.

3. Evaluate alternatives

Switching systems is easier today than many people think. Look for transparent pricing models, personalized support, and a future-proof architecture.
