News Articles (News Center)

With the News Center, you can publish news, how-to guides, and blog posts directly in your store: sorted by category, in multiple languages, with author, publication date, and information for search engines. This guide explains how to create categories and articles, what the store displays and where, and why an article or category might sometimes be missing.

At a Glance

  • Where: You can manage articles, categories, and authors under CMS → News Articles; comments under CMS → News Comments; and the display on the homepage and article page under Settings → Design → News Articles.
  • Select a category first: Every news article belongs to a news category. The “Add Article” tab will only appear once you’ve opened a category.
  • Activate status: A new article is initially inactive. It becomes visible when both the article and category are active and the publication date has been reached.
  • Schedule: Selecting “Publish News Article on” will automatically publish the article at 12:00 a.m. on the selected date.
  • Top News: A top news article is marked as “Top Topic” in the store and appears in the “Top Topics” sidebar at the top of the news overview.

In this guide

Here’s how the News Center is structured

News articles are ideal for company news, how-to guides, blog posts, promotions, change logs, and legal notices. They are organized into categories that appear as topics in the store.

In the backend

Under CMS → News Articles, the “News Center” page opens. The list displays categories and articles. Use the tabs to create categories and articles (“Add Category,” “Add Article”) and manage authors (“Manage Authors”).

In the store

The news overview displays all articles, with topics available for filtering. Each article has its own page. In addition, there is the news section on the homepage, the “Latest News” box, and results in the store search.

Settings

You can specify what appears on the homepage and article pages under Settings → Design → News Articles. You can approve comments from your customers under CMS → News Comments.

Creating News Categories

First, create at least one category, such as “News” or “Guides.” Every article needs a category.

Add a Category

  1. Under CMS → News Articles, open the “Add Category” tab. To create a subcategory, first open the parent category.
  2. Enter the name for each language. The SEO name and meta tags (title, description, keywords) are optional.
  3. Optionally, set the “Category Image” and “Sort Order.” The “Status” is set to “Active” for new categories.
  4. Click “Save and Close” to save.

How Categories Appear in the Store

  • In the news overview as topics for filtering and in the sidebar under “Topic Areas,” each with the number of articles.
  • A topic only appears if at least one active article is directly assigned to that category. A scheduled article counts toward this total even before its publication date. The store does not display empty categories or top-level categories without any articles of their own.
  • Subcategories appear on equal footing with the main categories in the overview. The “News and Information” box displays only the main categories.
  • The category image displays the store search results for news articles that do not have their own image.

You can edit, delete, and move categories using the actions at the end of the row. You can change the status directly in the list. If you have moved a category with subcategories, click once on the “Rebuild Paths” tab: This recalculates the category paths for all news categories. If you change the name or SEO name of an existing category, its URL in the store will change; the store does not create a redirect from the old URL.

Creating a News Article

Four steps to a finished post.

Open a category

Under CMS → News Articles, click the category name or select it at the top under “Go to.”

Add an article

Open the “Insert Article” tab. The article will be placed in the open category.

Fill out

Set “Status” to “Active.” In the default language tab, fill in “News Article Name,” “Short Description,” and “Content.”

Save

"Insert and Close" takes you back to the list; "Insert" leaves the form open. Then review the article using "Preview."

Article template in the News Center: Note “News article in the category: Advice,” Status “Active,” Top News set to “Standard Article,” “Publish News Article on” set to March 20, 2027, Image, “Link Author” to Anna Example, “Author (Free-text Fallback),” Sort Order, and SEO History

The upper part of the article form applies to all languages: Status, Top News, Publication Date, Image, Author, and Sort Order. Click to enlarge.

Name, short description, and content are required in the default language. If the xoContentEditor is enabled for the content, the text field is not required. When saving, the store fills empty fields in other languages with the text from the default language; see Multilingual Support.

The Fields in Detail

At the top are the fields for all languages; below that, there is a tab for each language containing the texts.

FieldPurpose
Status“Active” or “Inactive.” New articles start out as inactive.
Top News"Top News" highlights the article; "Standard Article" is the default. See Top News.
Publish news article onBlank: visible immediately. With a date: visible starting at 12:00 a.m. on that day. The shop also displays this date as the article’s publication date.
ImageFeatured image from the file manager. See “Images” for where it appears.
Link AuthorAuthor from the author management section; see Authors.
Author (Free-text Fallback)Name of the author if no author is linked.
Sort OrderThe smaller number appears first: in the news overview, on the homepage, and in the list in the backend. If the numbers are the same, the most recent article appears first.
SEO HistoryOnly when editing: View and create redirects for old URLs of this article.
News Article TitleHeadline. Required in the default language.
Image TitleCaption below the featured image on the article page. The store generates the image’s alt text from the article’s name. Note: This field currently displays the German text in every language tab; check the image captions for the other languages after saving.
URL link to this news articleIs saved but not displayed in the current news layout. Place links directly within the content.
SEO NamePart of the URL. If left blank, it is generated from the name. If the name is already taken, the store adds a suffix and indicates this.
Meta Tags – Title, Description, KeywordsInformation for search engines. If no custom description is provided, the store uses the short description.
Short DescriptionTeaser text for the homepage, news overview, and store search. Required in the default language.
ContentThe actual article, created in the editor or using the xoContentEditor. Required in the default language.

Formatting Content

The editor is sufficient for simple texts. For more complex pages with columns, tiles, or custom HTML, there are other options.

Editor and Source Code

In the “Content” field, you can format text, set links, and insert images. You can edit the HTML directly via the editor’s source code view. Classes and ` style` attributes are preserved, while ` <script>` blocks are removed by the shop when saving.

Bulleted Lists

Create bulleted lists in the editor as lists, not as paragraphs with hyphens. In the default layout, the article text displays lists with bullets or numbers and indentation.

News Slider

If the “Slider” is enabled under Settings → Design → Slider (enabled by default), the article editor will include a “News Slider” section. Use “Add Slider Element” to add an image or video. The article page displays the first active element above the text.

xoContentEditor

Using the “Content (xoContentEditor)” button above the content field, you can build the article using rows, columns, and modules, separated by language. The button appears if the xoContentEditor is enabled for your store.

  • Building blocks: Text, Image, Video, Button, Accordion, Tabs, Card, Table, Timeline, Counter, Countdown, Hero, Icon Box, CTA Callout, Note Box, Testimonial, Map Embed, Form, Newsletter Signup, Product List, Custom HTML, and a Placeholder.
  • Custom HTML: The “Code / Custom HTML” block renders your markup unchanged, with a separate version for each language. This allows you to build blog and knowledge pages with your own layout and styles. from 4.9.21
  • Templates: Save successful layouts as templates and load them into your next article.
  • Back to the Editor: When you close the xoContentEditor, the text field displays the last saved result as HTML.

Detailed: xoContentEditor Guide.

In the tab for another language, “Translate via DeepL” translates one field at a time from the default language, while “Rewrite” has the AI rewrite the field’s content. Click to enlarge.

Images

A featured image is optional, but it makes the overview and shared links much more appealing.

Where the featured image appears

  • News overview: always; the first article is displayed in full size, and the rest as tiles.
  • Homepage: with “Show Homepage Image” or, for Top News, with “Top News (Homepage) Show Image on Homepage.”
  • Article page: only with “Detail Page: Show Image”; disabled by default. The “Image Title” appears below as a caption.
  • “Latest News” box: no image.

Thumbnail when sharing

If someone shares the article on social media, the store uses the featured image as the preview image; if there is no featured image, it uses the first image in the content. If both are missing, it uses the image from Settings → SEO / SEA → Title & Meta Tags → og:image - Fallback. from 4.9.12

Mark AI-generated images from 4.10

Below the article’s image field, on the category image, and on an author’s profile picture, there is a toggle labeled “AI-generated – Show notice.” When enabled, the image in the store displays the notice “AI-generated,” and the structured data marks it as AI-generated. You can select the corner of the label and its appearance under Settings → Design → AI Labeling using “AI Label: Position on News Images” and “AI Label: Appearance.” You decide whether an image needs to be labeled.

Do not use “Clean up source image folder” to organize your files. News post images are located in the category images folder. The tool under Settings → Design → Images does not recognize them as in use there and deletes them. Exclude the category folder when cleaning up; see Images & Media.

Manage Authors

A well-maintained author profile makes articles more credible—for readers and for search engines.

Create an Author

  1. Under CMS → News Articles, open the “Manage Authors” tab and select “New Author.”
  2. Enter the “Name”; optionally, fill in “Profile Picture,” “With the Company Since (Year),” “Email,” “Profile/Contact URL,” and “Company” (overrides the default) for external authors.
  3. Fill in “Function/Role” and “Biography” for each language.
  4. In the article, under “Link Author,” select the author. Only active authors are available for selection.

What the store displays

  • The author’s name in the article header.
  • Below the article, the “About the Author” box with a photo, position, company, and biography, provided the linked author has a profile photo, a biography, or a position.
  • If no author is linked, only the name from “Author (Free Text Fallback)” will appear.
  • If you delete an author, their articles will lose the link. The free-text content remains intact.
Author profile with the name Anna Beispiel, profile photo, “With the company since (year)” 2019, email, profile/contact URL, “Company (overrides default),” status “Active,” sort order, and in the DE tab, “Position/Role” Editorial Team, as well as the biography

The name, photo, and company apply to all languages; maintain the job title and biography separately for each language. Click to enlarge.

Publish, schedule, review

“Active” does not yet mean “published.” An article is visible in the store when all four conditions are met.

  1. “Active” status on the article.
  2. Active category: The product is in at least one news category whose status is “Active.”
  3. Text in the language: An article text exists for the visitor’s language. Saving it in the backend creates it for all languages.
  4. Publication date reached: “Publish news article on” is empty or is not in the future.

Schedule Publication

In “Publish news article on,” select a date in the future and set the status to “Active.” Starting at midnight on that day (server time), the article will appear on the homepage, in the overview, on the article page, and in the “Latest News” box, as well as in the sitemap the next time it is generated. You cannot select a specific time. This allows you, for example, to schedule posts that are supposed to appear at a specific date and time.

Preview and Review

“Preview” opens the article page in the shop. It shows only published articles; for an inactive or scheduled article, the error page appears—or, depending on the “SEO Automatic Redirect Behavior” setting, the homepage. In the list, the “Published” column displays a set publication date; otherwise, it shows a dash. The “Only unpublished news” filter lists inactive and scheduled articles.

Top News and Homepage

Use “Top News Articles” to highlight important posts. The toggle is available in the article and in the “Top News” column of the list.

What “Top News” Does

  • On the homepage and in the news overview, the article is marked as a “Top Story.”
  • The “Top Stories” sidebar in the news overview displays up to three articles: first the latest Top News items, followed by the latest other articles.
  • On the homepage, Top News has its own display toggles; see illustration.

Number and Order on the Home Page

The homepage displays news under “News” as soon as articles are published. The number of articles is determined by Settings → Design → News Articles → Number of Articles on Homepage (default: 10). Top News articles are included in this count; there is no separate count for Top News. Items are sorted by “Sort Order,” then by date, with the newest first. Top News items do not automatically appear at the top: If you want an article to appear higher in the list, assign it a lower sort order than the others—for example, -1.

Display in the Store

All news pages use a uniform layout: a dark header area with the topics, the first article displayed prominently, the rest as tiles, alongside “Topic Areas,” “Top Topics,” and a link to the newsletter. from 4.9.0

News overview in the shop: dark header with the categories “All,” “News,” “Guides,” and “Care Tips,” including the number of articles; a large featured article titled “New Fall Collection in the Sample Store”; two tiles, one of which is marked “Top Topic”; “Topic Categories” on the right; “Top Topics,” and a link to the newsletter

The news overview displays the first article in a large format, the rest as tiles, and next to them, topic areas, top topics, and the newsletter notice. Click to enlarge.

News Overview

Displays all published articles on a single page, sorted by sort order and date, each with an image, a short description, and a “Read More” link. Clicking on a topic displays only the articles in that category and its subcategories.

Under Settings → Design → News Articles, you can set the number of news items on the homepage, the display on the article page, and the comments, among other things. Click to enlarge.

The remaining fields in this group are from older layouts and do not function in the current news layout, including “Number of News Items per Page,” “Show URL Link,” “Show Status,” and “News Rating Requires Admin Approval.”

Comments and Ratings

Below each article, logged-in customers can write a comment with a star rating. You decide what appears.

Here’s how it works

Below the article is the “Customer Reviews” section with the “Comment” button. Guests are redirected to the login page. Each customer can comment on an article once.

Approve

New comments will not appear until you approve them. Under CMS → News Comments, you can approve, edit, or delete them. The store does not send notifications about new comments; be sure to check there regularly.

Disable

Under Settings → Design → News Articles, set “Opinions/Reviews (on/off)” to “ false.” The article page will then display neither comments nor the “Comment” button.

Move, copy, display in multiple categories

At the end of each article line, you’ll find the actions “Edit,” “Preview,” “Delete,” “Move,” and “Copy to.”

Link to another category

Use “Copy to” with the copy method “Link news article to More Categories”: The same article will also appear in a second category. Changes apply everywhere, but it appears only once in the overview.

Duplicate

“Copy to” with “Duplicate News Article” creates a separate article in the target category with all text, images, status, and date. The SEO title is copied as well: Change it in the copy so that both articles have their own URLs.

Move and Delete

“Move” changes the category. When “Deleting,” check the categories from which the article should be removed; it is only completely deleted once it has no category. Use the “SEO History” button in the delete dialog to redirect the old URL to another page beforehand.

Search Engines and URLs

News articles bring visitors to the store via search engines. The store handles most of this itself.

URLs and Redirects

  • By default, an article’s URL is /news/seo-name.html. In new stores, the “Overview” and “Topics” pages also start with /news/; in older stores, they start with /blog/.
  • If you change an article’s SEO name, the store creates the old URL in the SEO history and redirects it to the new one using a 301 redirect.
  • You can change the path portion under Settings → SEO / SEA → SEO Settings using “URL Prefix for News Articles” and “URL Prefix for Blog/News Overview.” This only takes effect in “Rewrite” URL mode; the store will continue to redirect old URLs.

Automatically for every article

  • Structured data as NewsArticle with title, description, publication and modification dates, image, author, and publisher, plus the breadcrumb trail.
  • An entry in the sitemap as soon as the article is published.
  • Results in the store search; see the Store Search Guide.

Revise texts with AI

Next to “News Article Name,” the three meta tags, the short description, and the content, you’ll see the “Revise” button. The AI rewrites the field and replaces its content, using the rest of the article’s details as a basis. Review the result before saving. The buttons appear when the AI features are enabled for your store and a provider is activated under Settings → Interfaces → Artificial Intelligence, for example, under “OpenAI (ChatGPT)” with “OpenAI API: Status On/Off” and “OpenAI API: Key.” You pay the provider’s fees directly there.

Multilingual Support

You maintain all text in a separate tab for each language. The image, status, date, and author apply to all languages.

Empty Languages

If you leave a language blank, the store will copy the text from the default language into it when you save. English visitors will then see the German text until you translate it.

DeepL in the Form

If a “DeepL Authkey” is stored under Settings → Interfaces → Translation Tools → DeepL, the option “Translate via DeepL” will appear next to the text fields in every language tab except the default language. The button translates the field from the default language, field by field.

Automatic Translation

Upon request, our support team can set up a regular DeepL translation process. It translates new articles and news categories, as well as those whose text in the default language has changed, and overwrites the other languages in the process. Therefore, you should make your own corrections in another language only after this run has completed.

News Articles via Interface XONIC Premium: xoPort Datenschnittstelle

Using the xoPort interface, you can create, edit, and export news articles, news categories, and authors from other systems. For new articles that arrive in only one language, the shop populates the other languages with this text so that the automatic translation can process them. from 4.9.106

You can post a saved article to your shop’s Facebook page with a single click.

Set Up and Post

  1. Under Settings → Interfaces → SEO/SEA → Facebook (Meta), enter the “Facebook (Meta) App ID” and “Facebook (Meta) App Secret.”
  2. Under Settings → SEO / SEA → Facebook OAuth, connect your Facebook page.
  3. Open a saved article. Below the form, you’ll find the “Social Media” section with “Post Now (Facebook).” The post includes the name, a short description (truncated to 200 characters), and the link to the article.

Scheduled articles from 4.9.12

If the article is scheduled, the button says “Schedule for Publication”: Facebook will then publish the post on the publication date. Facebook only allows scheduling between 10 minutes and 30 days in advance; outside this window, or for inactive articles or categories, the button is disabled and displays the reason. The “Post History” shows all posts with their status and the actions “Retry” or “Delete Post.” In the list, the “Social” column indicates which articles are on Facebook.

The list in the backend

You can keep track of everything, even with a large number of articles.

List under CMS → News Articles in the "Guides" category with the "Care Tips" subcategory and four articles; columns: Sort Order, Created, Modified, Published (showing March 20, 2027 for scheduled articles), Status, and Top News; on the right, the open gear menu ranging from “Only published news” to “Reset filter”

For each article, the list shows the publication date, status, and “Top News”; the gear icon next to the search bar opens additional filters. Click to enlarge.

Filters

The gear icon next to the search bar opens “Published News Only,” “Unpublished News Only,” “Top News (Sticky) Only,” “Categories Only,” and “Articles Only.” The “Include subcategories” and “Hide inactive” toggles are located above the list.

Search

The search field finds articles and categories by name. The list updates shortly after you enter a search term. Click “Go to” to jump to a category, and “Display” to select the number of rows.

Sorting and Toggling

Clicking a column header sorts by name, sort order, “Created,” “Modified,” “Published,” status, or Top News. You can toggle status and Top News directly in the row.

Is an article or category not visible in the store?

Check these points in order.

Item is missing

  1. Status: Is the article set to “Active”? New articles start out as inactive.
  2. Date: Is the “Publish news item on” date in the future? If so, it won’t appear until that day.
  3. Category: Is it in an active category? An item located only in inactive categories will be missing from the homepage, the box, and the item page.
  4. Homepage: It displays only as many articles as allowed by “Number of Articles on Homepage.” Articles sorted further down the list are missing there but appear in the news overview.
  5. Language: Was the article created via an interface prior to XONIC 4.9.106 in only one language? If so, it will be missing in the other languages until you save it once in the backend.

Category Missing

  1. Status: Is the category set to “Active”?
  2. Article: Is there at least one active article directly in this category? The store does not display empty categories or parent categories without their own articles as a theme.
  3. Parent Category: If a subcategory exists, is its parent category also active?
  4. Box: The “News and Information” box displays only main categories.
  5. Multiple Domains: If you operate multiple stores using a single backend, save the category again after creating or publishing products. This updates the theme list across all domains.
To hide an item, set the item itself to “Inactive.” An inactive category hides it on the homepage, in the box, and on the item page, but it remains in the “All” view of the news overview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn’t a created news category appear in the store?

Most often, it does not yet contain any active articles. The store only displays a category once at least one active article is directly assigned to that category. Also check the status of the category and its parent category. The complete list can be found under “Not Visible?”.

How do I change the number of news items and top news items displayed?

Go to Settings → Design → News Articles and adjust the “Homepage Number of Articles” (default is 10). Top News items are included in this count; there is no separate limit for Top News. The “Top Topics” sidebar in the news overview displays up to three articles; this number is fixed.

How do I move a Top News item to the top of the homepage?

The homepage sorts by “Sort Order” and then by date. Assign the article a lower sort order than the others, for example, -1.

How do I disable the comment feature for news articles?

Under Settings → Design → News Articles, set “Opinions/Ratings (on/off)” to “ false.” The article page will then display neither comments nor the “Comment” button.

How do I link the News section in the menu?

Under Products → Categories / Products, create a category, set “Page Type” to “Internal Link,” select “News” as the “Link Target,” and enable “Category as Header Tab.” See the step-by-step instructions under “Link in the Menu.”

Why don’t I see bullet points in the article?

Create the list in the editor as a list, not as paragraphs. In the default layout, the article text displays lists with bullets and indentation. If they’re still missing, a rule in your own template is likely overriding the display. Please contact us in that case.

Can I build blog and knowledge pages with my own HTML and CSS?

Yes. In the editor, you can edit the source code directly; classes and ` style` specifications are preserved. Using the xoContentEditor, insert the “Code / Custom HTML” block, which outputs your markup unchanged. The shop removes ` <script>` blocks from the editor text when you save.

Why does the English version contain German text?

The shop fills empty language fields with the default language when you save. Translate the fields in the Language tab, using “Translate via DeepL,” or via automatic translation.

Why does the preview show “Not Found”?

The preview only shows published articles. If the article is inactive, scheduled, or only in inactive categories, the error page appears. Check the status, category, and publication date.
