SEO URLs, Meta Tags, and Redirects
The store automatically generates descriptive URLs, page titles, and sitemaps, and automatically redirects renamed pages. This guide shows you where to manage SEO titles and meta tags, how to set up 301 redirects for old, inactive, and deleted pages, and what the store handles for you regarding canonical tags, hreflang, noindex, and sitemaps.
At a Glance
- Where: under Settings → SEO / SEA with “SEO Settings,” “Title & Meta Tags,” and “SEO Redirects”; sitemaps are found under Tools → SEO Sitemaps. You can manage the title and description of an individual page in the edit screen for a product, category, CMS page, or manufacturer.
- URLs: The store generates them based on the name. You can assign a fixed SEO name for products and categories if “SEO Pro Settings” is enabled.
- Renaming: The old URL automatically redirects to the new one via a 301 redirect for one year by default.
- Custom Redirects: Set up individually under “SEO Redirects” or via a CSV file when migrating the store. The target is always a product, a category, a CMS page, a manufacturer, or a news article.
- Products that are no longer available: By default, the store redirects to the category specified in the URL; if no category is in the URL, it redirects to the homepage. This can be customized.
- Automatic: The shop automatically handles canonical tags, hreflang, sitemaps, and redirects for parameter and slash variations.

How the Store Generates Its URLs
With the default settings, each page is assigned a descriptive URL based on its name. Pages in other languages begin with /lng/ followed by the language code.
| Page | Example | How the name is generated |
|---|---|---|
| Category | /bekleidung/t-shirts/ | Name of the category or its SEO name, including the path of the parent categories. The URL ends with a forward slash. |
| Product | /bekleidung/t-shirts/bio-shirt.html | Article name or SEO name, with the category path prepended by default |
| CMS Page | /cms/versand-und-zahlung.html | "SEO Name" of the CMS page |
| Manufacturer | /brand/musterwerk.html | Manufacturer’s name |
| News Article | /news/neue-kollektion.html | SEO name of the news article; see news article |
| Additional Language | /lng/en/clothing/t-shirts/ | Name or SEO name in this language |
The prefixes cms, brand, and news can be changed; see URL prefixes. The default settings are located under Settings → SEO / SEA → SEO Settings:
| Field | Effect |
|---|---|
| “Enable Search Engine-Friendly (SEO) URLs,” “SEO URL Type” | Only XONIC Support can see these two basic toggles. By default, SEO URLs are enabled in “Rewrite” mode; custom SEO names only work with this setting. |
| “Append category path to product URLs within categories” | On (default): /kategorie/artikel.html. Off: /artikel.html. Changing this setting alters the URL of every product. If you have a live store, please consult with us before making this change. |
| “Maximum SEO Category Names (Recursion Depth)” | The maximum number of category names that can precede the product name; default is 5 |
| “SEO Advanced Settings” | Disabled by default. When enabled, the store displays the “SEO - URL” field in the product and category screens, the “SEO - Text” field for the category, and the “SEO History” button on the product screen. |
| “SEO Automatic Redirect Behavior” | What happens to URLs of pages that are no longer accessible; see “Inactive” or “Deleted” |
The “Rewrite_V1.5” variant with URLs such as /artikelname-p-12.html is no longer used. Upon update, the store switches to “Rewrite” and redirects the old URLs via a 301redirect.from 4.10

Set SEO Names
Without a custom SEO name, the URL follows the page’s name. If you change the name, the URL changes. A fixed SEO name keeps it consistent.
| Page | Where |
|---|---|
| Article | Product template, “SEO” tab, “SEO - URL” field for each language. Visible under “SEO Advanced Settings.” |
| Category | Products → Categories / Products, Edit Category, “SEO - URL” field for each language. Visible with “SEO Advanced Settings.” |
| CMS Page | CMS → CMS Manager, “SEO - Name” field for each language, always visible |
| Manufacturer | No separate field; the address follows the name under Products → Manufacturer |
| Store Pages such as Special Offers | "SEO Name" field under "Customize SEO Tags," see Fixed Store Pages |
This is how the store rewrites the name
- Lowercase letters; “ä,” “ö,” “ü,” and “ß” are converted to “ae,” “oe,” “ue,” and “ss”; accents are converted to their base letters
- Spaces and underscores are converted to hyphens; multiple hyphens are combined into a single hyphen
- Periods and other special characters are omitted. Therefore, enter the name without
.htmland without slashes. - If another item already has that name, the store will notify you and append the item ID. For categories, the entire path matters: the same name may appear under different top-level categories.
Fixed Instead of Automatic
If product names change frequently—for example, due to imports from the ERP system—assign a fixed SEO name. This ensures the URL remains the same when the product is renamed, and no redirect is created. In contrast, every changed URL requires a redirect, which is removed after its expiration date.
SEO Names in Other Languages
Each language has its own name and thus its own URL. If you leave the name of a category or product blank in a language, the store will use the text from the default language when saving. The English URL will then remain in German. The same applies to meta titles, meta descriptions, and keywords.
Therefore, translate the name—and, using “SEO Pro Settings,” also the “SEO URL”—in every language. When using DeepL for translations, the store generates the SEO name for the target language from the translated name and redirects to the updated URL.
URL Prefixes for News, Manufacturers, CMS, and Badges
CMS pages, manufacturers, news, and product badges have a prefix before their names. You can change this under Settings → SEO / SEA → SEO Settings.
| Field | Default | Example |
|---|---|---|
| “URL Prefix for Blog/News Overview” | news | /news/ and News Categories |
| “URL Prefix for News Articles” | news | /news/artikel.html |
| “URL prefix: Manufacturer” | brand | /brand/marke.html |
| “URL prefix for CMS pages” | cms | /cms/seite.html |
| “URL Prefix for Product Badges” | badge | /badge/aktion.html |
- These guidelines apply to new stores. Older stores will retain
blogandmanufacturerso that their URLs remain the same. - Use only lowercase letters, with no slashes or spaces. Terms like
productorcategoryare not allowed. - The store redirects requests with the original prefix (
blog, manufacturer, news, cms, badge) to the set prefix using a 301 redirect. - It does not recognize any prefixes used in the interim. Therefore, change a prefix only once if possible.
Page Title and Meta Description
The title and description appear in the browser tab and in search results. These are not required fields: if a field is left blank, the store will insert a default text. The search engine itself decides which excerpt to display.
| Page | Where | If empty |
|---|---|---|
| Home | Settings → SEO / SEA → Title & Meta Tags: “Title (Store Name),” “Description,” and “Keywords”; title and description for each language | – |
| Category | Category template: “Meta Tags - Title,” “Meta Tags - Description,” “Meta Tags - Keywords (comma-separated)” | Title from “Different Category Heading” or name, plus the store name. Description: Excerpt from the short description, description, or SEO text with a maximum of 155 characters; otherwise, the description from the homepage.from 4.9.62 |
| Product | Product template, “SEO” tab: “Meta Title,” “Meta Description,” “Meta Keywords,” plus the “Google Search Results Preview” | Title from the product name and store name; description from the short description or the beginning of the description |
| CMS Page | CMS → CMS Manager: “Meta Tags - Title,” “Meta Tags - Description,” “Meta Tags - Keywords (comma-separated)” | Title consists of the page name and the store name; description is the homepage description |
| Manufacturer | Products → Manufacturer: “Meta Tags - Title,” “Meta Tags - Description,” “Meta Tags - Keywords (comma-separated)” | Title based on manufacturer name and store name, description of the home page |
| Store pages such as special offers | “Customize SEO Tags,” see below | Page title and store name |
| News Articles | See the News Article Guide | – |
In the “SEO” tab of the product editor, the Google search results preview shows you what the meta title and meta description will look like in search results as you type. Click to enlarge.
Store Name in the Title
For automatically generated titles, the system appends “, Shop Name” to the end. If a custom title is entered in the field, nothing is appended. You can disable this suffix under Settings → SEO / SEA → SEO Settings → Remove “Shop Title” or “Shop Name” from the Title Meta Tag.
Pagination Pages
Starting on page 2 of a category, the system appends “ – Page 2” to the title and description. This ensures that each pagination page has its own title.Do not enter the page number manually into the fields.from 4.9.61
Keywords
Google does not take meta keywords into account. If the field is left blank for a product, the store inserts the category name and the product name and appends the “Keywords” from “Title & Meta Tags,” provided the store name is included in the title.
As a guideline, a title should be around 55 characters, and a description should be one to two sentences with about 110 to 155 characters. The search engine truncates longer texts in the search results. You can import meta texts for multiple products or categories at once via CSV; see Import & Export (CSV).
Static Store Pages and Home Page
Under Settings → SEO / SEA → Title & Meta Tags, you’ll find the values for the homepage: “Title (Store Name),” “Description,” “Keywords,” the general “Robots” setting, the favicon, and “og:image - Fallback” for the preview when sharing. The “Customize SEO Tags” tab applies to static store pages such as Special Offers, New Arrivals, or Contact:
- Select the page under “Page Name.”
- Enable “Status” and, if necessary, select “robots meta tag.”
- For each language, enter the “SEO Name” (required), “Meta Tags – Title,” “Meta Tags – Description,” and “Meta Tags – Keywords,” then save.
Homepage, Products, Categories, CMS Pages, Manufacturers, and News are not listed there; maintain their text as shown in the table above. Changing the “SEO Name” of a shop page changes its URL without a redirect. The guide “Designing the Home Page” explains the texts for the home page itself (welcome text, SEO text).
Under “Title & Meta Tags,” you’ll find the title, description, keywords, and robots directive for the homepage, as well as the favicon and thumbnail image for sharing. Click to enlarge.
Controlling Indexing: robots and noindex
With the robots directive, you tell search engines whether they should index a page (index or noindex) and whether they should follow the links on it (follow or nofollow).
| Page | Where | Values |
|---|---|---|
| CMS Page | CMS → CMS Manager, “robots meta tag” field. This appears when “Shop Content Page (can be accessed and linked to within the shop)” is enabled. | index, follow, noindex, follow, noindex, nofollow |
| Shop page | "Customize SEO Tags," "robots Meta-tag" field | the same three |
| Product | Product template, “SEO” tab, “robots meta tag” field. “Default (global)” applies the Shop settings. Variants inherit the “noindex” setting from their master product; use index, follow to override this for a specific variant. With “noindex,” the product is alsoexcluded from the product and image sitemaps.from 4.10 | Default, index, follow, noindex, follow, noindex, nofollow |
| General | Settings → SEO / SEA → Title & Meta Tags → Robots; for pages without their own settings | Default index, follow |
The general setting “Robots” is not a toggle to keep the entire store out of search engines: The store serves category, product, filter, and browse pages with index, follow. index, nofollow does not provide a filter.
Inactive and Test Products
Inactive products are not accessible in the store: The store either redirects their URL or returns a 404 error and removes them from the sitemap. Search engines will eventually remove them from the index. Therefore, the easiest way to handle a test product is to leave it inactive.
The “Link in XML sitemaps for search engines” toggle only removes a product from the sitemap. It remains accessible and indexable. An active product is marked as “noindex” via the “robots meta tag” field. from 4.10
robots.txt
At /robots.txt, the store serves the blocking rules from the file robots.txt in the store directory; by default, these apply to the backend and to URLs containing session and action parameters, among other things. It automatically adds the line “Sitemap:” with your domain’s sitemap index. You can exclude AI training crawlers via Settings → Privacy → GEO IP Policies → Exclude AI Training via robots.txt.
A block in the robots.txt file only prevents the page from being fetched; it does not prevent it from being included in the index. For a search engine to detect a noindex tag, a 404 error, or a redirect, the URL must not be blocked there.
Redirects Set by the Store Itself
In most cases, you don’t need to do anything. All redirects in this table are permanent (301). The toggles are located under Settings → SEO / SEA → SEO Settings.
| Reason | Behavior | Switch |
|---|---|---|
| Product, category, CMS page, manufacturer, or news article renamed | old URL → new URL. The store creates an entry for this under “SEO Redirects,” with an expiration date set for one year from now. | Always |
Access via a parameterized URL such as store-products.php?products_id=12 or store-cms.php?cID=5 | → the page’s SEO URL; other parameters are retained | “SEO: 301 redirect from parameter URLs to SEO URLs,” enabled by default |
Category without a trailing slash, such as /bekleidung | → /bekleidung/, only if a category is active | “SEO: 301 redirect of category URLs without a slash to the slash form,” enabled by default |
Capitalized URL, for example /BEKLEIDUNG/ | → lowercase URL | always |
| An article is accessed via a category path in which it is not located | → URL with a valid category path | “SEO: Automatic canonical redirect of invalid product links,” enabled by default. Only works if product URLs include the category path. |
| URL with the original prefix | → URL with the configured prefix | Always; see URL prefixes |
You can view the automatic entries alongside your own under “SEO Redirects.” There, you can extend their expiration date if an old URL has many external links pointing to it.
Create Redirects Yourself: SEO Redirects
Under Settings → SEO / SEA → SEO Redirects, you’ll find all of the store’s redirects—both automatic and custom. Here, you can redirect a deleted page, a deactivated page, or a URL from the old store to a new destination.
The list of all SEO links: On the left is what the old URL belonged to (red = page deleted); on the right is the destination and the expiration date of the redirect. Click to enlarge.
The easiest way is directly from the edit screen
Products, categories, CMS pages, manufacturers, and news articles have an “SEO History” button in their edit screen and in the delete dialog. Clicking it opens the redirects for that page. When you click “Insert,” the “Affiliation” and “Link Name” fields for each language are already filled in. In the product form, the button appears only under “SEO Advanced Settings,” but it’s always visible in the delete dialog. When opened from the article form, the tabs are labeled “SEO Links for the Product” and “SEO Links Pointing to the Product”; the CSV import option isn’t available there.
- Edit the page or select “Delete” and click “SEO History.”
- Select“Insert.” Check the affiliation and link names.
- Under “Target Type,” select Category, CMS Key, Manufacturer, Product, or News Article, and then select the target below (for categories, the field is labeled “Exact Affiliation”; select using the “Category Quick Navigation” folder button).
- If necessary, change the “Delete Date” and save by clicking “Insert.”
- Only now should you deactivate or delete the page.
- Enter the old address in the browser and check whether it redirects to the correct destination.
When opened from the product form, the “Belonging” and “Link Name” fields are already filled in; you select the destination yourself—a category via the folder button. Click to enlarge.
The fields
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| “Affiliation Type,” “Exact Affiliation” | the page to which the old address belonged. For a deleted page, the type is sufficient. For a deactivated article and a deactivated CMS page, “Exact Affiliation” must specify this exact page. |
| “Link Name” per language | The old path without the domain, without .html, without a trailing slash, without /lng/en/, and without a prefix such as cms/ or brand/. Examples: bekleidung/alte-shirts for a category, bio-shirt-alt for an article, musterwerk for a manufacturer. Fill in only the languages in which the old address existed. |
| “Destination Type,” “Exact Destination” | the new page. The store generates the destination URL in the visitor’s language. |
| “Delete Date” | the date until which the redirect is valid. If left blank: one year. After that, the store removes the entry. For old URLs with many external links, select a later date. |
When you save, the store converts the link name to SEO-friendly format as described under “SEO Names.” Therefore, it’s best to import old URLs with underscores via CSV. URLs with parameters (?id=…) or endings like .php or .htm require a rule in the .htaccess. Check URLs with umlauts in your browser after creating them. If a redirect isn’t working, we’ll help you set up a rule.
The tabs
- "All SEO Links": List showing "Source," "SEO Link," "Destination," "Date/Time," and "Delete Date," with search and "Show Full Links"
- “Insert” and “CSV Import”
- “.htaccess SEO Links”: Displays the redirects from the file
.htaccesswith status codes. They cannot be edited there.
What SEO History Can’t Do
- Destinations outside the store or store pages such as special offers. For these, use category redirects or the
.htaccessfile. - Placeholders for entire directories
- Redirecting a URL that still belongs to an active page. The active page always takes precedence.
Multiple URLs at once: CSV import for store migration
After migrating from another store system or restructuring the categories, import the old URLs as a CSV file.
- Under Settings → SEO / SEA → SEO Redirects, open the “CSV Import” tab and upload the sample file
redirects.csv. It contains the headersource, target, code. - For each line, enter the old address under
sourceand the new address in the store undertarget, with or without the domain. - Upload the file, select the “Data field separator” (comma, semicolon, or pipe), and click “Import.”
- Review the messages: see how many rows were created and in which rows the destination could not be found. For these rows, the store displays a completed row for
.htaccess, such asRedirect 301 /alt.php /neu/.
source,target,code
https://www.example.com/alte-kategorie/,https://www.example.com/bekleidung/,301
/alte_shirts/bio-shirt.html,/bekleidung/t-shirts/bio-shirt.html,301
/lng/en/old-shirt.html,/lng/en/clothing/organic-shirt.html,301
- The shop identifies the page type based on the address:
.htmlfor products, CMS pages, and news; a forward slash at the end for categories./lng/en/determines the language. - The old URL must end with
.htmlor a forward slash. Other URLs will end up in the “Unprocessed Lines” section with an .htaccess suggestion. - The destination must be an existing page. It’s safest to create manufacturer destinations individually.
- The “
code” column only affects the suggested .htaccess line. Entries from the SEO History always redirect with a 301 status code. - A line containing an old address that has already been entered will replace the existing entry. The deletion date is set to one year after the import.
- You can change the `
.htaccess` via FTP. We’ll help you with that.
Redirects can also be created, read, and deleted via the REST interface; see the API documentation.
Inactive and Deleted Pages
What happens to the URL of a deactivated or deleted page depends on the page type and a specific setting. A separate entry under “SEO Redirects” takes precedence.
| Page | Without a specific entry |
|---|---|
| Article deactivated or deleted | Depends on “SEO Automatic Redirect Behavior”; see below |
| Category deactivated or deleted | 404. With the value “full”: 301 redirect to the next active parent category in the URL, otherwise to the homepage. |
| CMS page, manufacturer, or news article deleted | 404; with “full,” 301 redirect to the homepage |
| CMS page deactivated | 404. An entry with “Exact Affiliation”redirects.from 4.9.34 |
| Article or category blocked for guests (customer group) | Customers with access can view the page. An entry under “SEO Redirects” only takes effect for everyone else if “SEO: Redirect blocked (gated) pages via SEO history with a 301 redirect” is enabled (disabled by default). |
SEO Automatic Redirect Behavior
Under Settings → SEO / SEA → SEO Settings → SEO Automatic Redirect Behavior, select one of three options:
| Value | Effect |
|---|---|
recommended (Default) | Items that are no longer accessible—i.e., deactivated, deleted, or unknown .html addresses—are redirected via a 301 redirect to the category specified in their URL. There, the customer sees the message “The product was not found.” If no category is specified in the URL, the redirect leads to the homepage. |
full | such as recommended. Additionally, category URLs and other URLs that cannot be found are redirected to the next active category in the URL or to the home page. |
false | No automatic redirect. The store responds with a 404 and displays a page with suggestions. |
Redirect inactive products to the category: If the product URLs include the category path, customers will be directed to the category when entering recommended. To set a specific destination, use the “SEO History” button to create an entry with this product as the associated item.
Redirecting a Category
An active category can lead to a different destination instead of its own page—such as a CMS page, another category, or an address outside the store. This allows you to reach destinations that SEO History doesn’t recognize.
- Edit the category under Products → Categories / Products.
- Under “Page Type,” select: “Standard” (normal category page), “Internal Link,” or “External Link.”
- For “Internal Link,” select a category, a CMS page, a news category, or a store page (such as “Special Offers”) from the list under “Link Target.” For “External Link,” enter the address under “External URL.”
- Save.
- The navigation and breadcrumbs link directly to the destination. Anyone who enters the category’s address will be redirected there via a 301 redirect.
- External links open in a new window in the navigation.
- Never select the category itself as the destination.
- Subcategories remain accessible. The redirected category itself is no longer listed in the category sitemap.from 4.9.34
Using the “Internal Link” page type, the category links to another destination in the store—in this case, the CMS page “Shipping and Payment.” Click to enlarge.
301 or 302?
A 301 redirect is permanent: Search engines will index the new URL. A 302 redirect is temporary: The old URL remains the valid one.
301 in the Store
All redirects for changed, old, and no-longer-accessible URLs are 301: renames, entries under “SEO Redirects,” category redirects, and variations involving parameters, slashes, and prefixes.
302 in the Store
The store sets a 302 after certain actions: after “Add to Cart,” after changing filters or views, from customer account pages to the login page, and in maintenance mode to the maintenance page. Such URLs are not considered pages by search engines. If an SEO tool reports a 302 there, that’s correct.
A line like ` Redirect /alt /neu ` in ` .htaccess ` without a status code is a 302. For permanent redirects, use a 301: ` Redirect 301 /alt /neu`. The status codes of existing lines are displayed in the “.htaccess SEO Links” tab.
Canonical and Products in Multiple Categories
Each page specifies its main URL as the canonical URL. The store sets this automatically; there is no field for it.
- Sorting and filtering options within a category link to the category itself without any parameters.
- Pagination pages starting from page 2 link to themselves, since they display different products.
- A pagination page beyond the last page returns a 404.from 4.9.26
Products in Multiple Categories
If a product is listed in multiple categories, it needs a primary URL for the canonical tag and the sitemap. The store selects the active category with the lowest sort order. If the sort orders are the same, the category with the lowest ID wins—usually the category created first. This is why a product’s link sometimes shows a different category than expected.
Settings → SEO / SEA → SEO Settings → SEO: Allow Multiple Category Links determines how the store links in the other categories: “No” (default, recommended) always uses the primary URL, while “Yes” uses any valid category path.
You select the main category yourself in the product editor under the “Miscellaneous” tab in the Categories section: “Use this category as the main category for the product.” The line “Automatic: …” shows which category the store would otherwise use. The main category determines the category path, canonical tag, sitemap entry, and the category in price portal feeds.from 4.10
Multiple Languages and Domains: hreflang
If multiple languages are active in the store, each page lists its versions in the other languages (hreflang) and the default language as x-default.
- The store links only to main URLs, without sort or filter parameters.
- If a language version is missing—for example, in an untranslated news article—it omits it.from 4.9.34
- To ensure the URLs differ by language, translate the names; see SEO Names.
For a multishop where each domain serves a market in a specific language, there are three fields under Settings → General → Multishop, all of which are disabled or empty by default:
| Field | Effect |
|---|---|
| “Multishop: Domains are language/market shops (link via hreflang)” | links the domains to each other via hreflang, with one language region per domain |
| “Multishop: Remove foreign-language duplicates from the index (noindex)” | sets language versions on domains that are not their target market to ` noindex, follow`. Each language remains indexable on a single domain. |
| “Multishop: Override hreflang Regions” | sets the region for each domain if the domain extension does not match |
These fields modify the hreflang and robots directives for all domains. Enable them only after consulting with us.
XML Sitemaps
The store generates sitemaps for categories, products, CMS pages, product images, and news, as well as a sitemap index at sitemap_index.xml. The robots.txt file references it directly. Submit the index in Search Console; see Google Search Console.
Regenerate
Under Tools → SEO Sitemaps, click the tabs 1 through 6 in order: Categories, Products, Product Images, CMS Pages, News, and finally the Sitemap Index. The overview shows the date, entries, and size for each file, as well as the status of the robots.txt file. The store automatically splits large sitemaps so that no single file contains more than 50,000 URLs or exceeds 50 MB.
What’s Included
- Active categories, products, and CMS pages for which “Link in XML sitemaps for search engines” is enabled
- Only categories that guests are allowed to view
- Only products that guestsare allowed to viewfrom 4.9.62
- No redirected categories from 4.9.34
- CMS pages only if “Shop Content Page…” is enabled and they have an SEO title in the respective language
- FAQ pages and shop pages such as special offers are not included in any sitemap. Search engines find them via the links in the shop.
Settings
Under Settings → SEO / SEA → SEO Settings:
| Field | Effect |
|---|---|
| “SEO Sitemaps On/Off” | On by default |
| “SEO Sitemap Languages” | Which languages the sitemaps contain; German by default. Select each language into which your texts have been translated. |
| “Automatically Update SEO Sitemaps” | Default setting: On—regenerates when articles, categories, and CMS pages are saved. For very large databases, this can increase save times. In that case, turn it off and regenerate manually on a regular basis. |
| “SEO Sitemap Warning Interval” | After how many days the backend warns of outdated sitemaps; default is 7 |
| “Sitemap Cron: Token (optional),” “Sitemap Cron: Minimum Interval (minutes)” | protect the scheduled generation via cron job. Enter a long random value as the token if a cron job generates the sitemaps. We’ll help you set up the cron job. |
Under “SEO Sitemaps,” tabs 1 through 6 regenerate the files; the overview shows the status, size, and robots.txt. Click to enlarge.
llms.txt for AI assistants from 4.9.122
Under “ /llms.txt,” the store provides an overview based on llmstxt.org: store name, short description, provider and contact information, product range, brands, service and legal pages, FAQs, new posts, and the sitemap. This feature is enabled by default.
| Field under Settings → Privacy → GEO IP Policies | Effect |
|---|---|
| “Generate llms.txt automatically” | Off: /llms.txt returns a 404 error |
| “llms.txt: Short description” | One to two sentences per language. Blank: the meta description of the homepage. |
| “llms.txt: Additional Facts” | One verifiable piece of information per line, maximum of 15 |
| “llms.txt: Sections” | Which lists the file contains |
- The file applies to the domain’s default language. The store caches it for 24 hours. If you save the fields, it regenerates the file.
- Categories for which “Link in XML sitemaps for search engines” is turned off are not included.
- A manually uploaded `
llms.txt` file in the store directory takes precedence. - Whether and how AI services use the file is determined by the providers.
Common Issues
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Custom redirect isn't working | The old address is still associated with an active page; the link name contains .html, a prefix, or /lng/xx/; the deletion date has passed; or, for a deactivated item, “Exact Match” is missing. | Check the entry; the easiest way is to create a new one using the “SEO History” button on the page |
| Category URLs without a slash result in a 404 error | Category is inactive or “SEO: 301 redirect of slash-less category URLs to the slash form” is turned off | Activate the category or toggle the switch on |
| The English address or English meta title is in German | The field was empty in English; the store adopted the default language. | Maintain the name, SEO name, and meta descriptions in every language |
| The product link points to a different category than expected | Rule for the main address: lowest sort order, then lowest category ID | Adjust the sorting of categories. You can select the main category yourself starting with version 4.10. |
| The store changes an entered SEO URL | SEO format or name already in use | Enter names without special characters and without .html; choose an available name |
| Deleted items appear on the home page | recommended is the default for product URLs without a category path | Create an entry under “SEO Redirects” or set the redirect behavior to false |
| Old address with an umlaut from the previous store does not redirect | The link name is rewritten upon saving (ü to ue). | Check in the browser and contact us. We’ll resolve this with a rule in the .htaccess. |
| Link in a CMS text leads nowhere | Link with a shortened category path, such as index.php?cPath=15 | Set the link via the editor’s link list; it will enter the full path. Starting with version 4.10, the shop corrects shortened paths automatically. |
| Page is indexed despite being blocked in robots.txt | robots.txt only prevents the page from being fetched | Remove the block, then let `noindex`, a redirect, or a 404 error take effect |
